1665: CELEBRITY SIGHTING: CARLOS D
Coming home tonight, I crossed paths with Carlos D and his dog.
As with virtually every time I see a celebrity, it dawns on me later that I could have just said something. I feel the same disappointment when I fail to acknowledge non-celebrities on the street when they're doing or wearing something I like. It would be so easy to just take a second and give someone the type of little compliment that I almost always appreciate receiving from polite people whose natures, unlike mine, permit them do to that sort of thing without feeling awkward about it. About five minutes earlier, a woman on the train had told me she liked the big bow on my blouse -- and, you know what? I thought that was pretty nice. And yet, if the situation were reversed, I know I wouldn't have taken the time to comment on her style. That's a shame.
Likewise, I've enjoyed listening to Interpol -- and yet I couldn't just say that? To be fair, I think the first thing that occurred to me to say was "I liked Our Love to Admire," but that doesn't really sound like a compliment, does it? Probably better to just have said I liked his dog, which I did -- particularly for the sweet jump it took off the curb when it was time to cross the street -- but I wouldn't want to appear to be the kind of person who was willfully pretending not to care who he was. I'm never sure why some people feel pride for behaving that way, as if simply ignoring someone more people happen know elevates your position in the world without your actually having to DO ANYTHING NOTABLE WITH YOUR LIFE. That's just lame.
The truth is that I just don't initiate conversations with people, regardless of what they've done that interests me or that I genuinely appreciate. Also, to be entirely honest, I was in the middle of a Blackberry Messenger conversation with Pete about banana bread.
And because I understand how the internet works, and how many people will find this blog entry and expect some details, I'll give them: No mustache, no skunk streak, and no Crispin Glover.
