1655: Tough guy.
For those who don't know, I own a rabbit. His name is Dewey and he was recently very sick. To combat this illness, he is receiving a round of antibiotics which are administered orally, via a plastic syringe, twice a day... by me.
Given that he is roughly the size of an eggplant and yet considerably lower in weight, it may come as something of a surprise that it is virtually impossible to control this tiny animal whenever it's time to administer his medication. When I had Pete here to assist in bunny-grappling, things were easier. With Pete away on business, staying in what has been described to me as a swanky-bungalow, I have been left alone to nurse the furious little guy back to health. He's just as docile as he can be, until he sees me loading up the syringe. Then he's all business... the business of giving me the business...
So, there's always the unpleasantness of this incident looming over the time I spend with Dewey before and after work. It only lasts a little while, but just knowing it's coming makes me sad. I hate seeing him unhappy, but I also hate seeing him sick -- so rather than letting him go when he grunts and tries to squirm free, I remind myself that loving the little guy means dealing with this. And hopefully it's just for a little while longer; he should be off medication next week and back to his old self again soon. In fact, his anger over getting medicated seems to be increasing in direct proportion to the increase in all other signs of his normal behavior returning. Sometimes I think about what it would be like to own a big, slow and presumably much more docile rabbit -- but then I think about how much fun it is having a little one with so much attitude.
He's like the Joe Pesci of bunnies...
Does he amuse you?
