1541: Bang!
I've had kind of a hectic day, but I did get a number of things accomplished on the personal front - to say nothing for the relief that comes from having a working fridge and nothing exploding (knock on wood) in your apartment.
Normally, I feel a sense of relief when I encounter misfortune. Perhaps because I spend so much time anticipating bad things happening, which is an exhausting way to live, I feel better when something bad finally does happen. Regardless of whether anything bad could happen, regardless of whether I can do anything to prevent it, and regardless of any sense of logic that might otherwise tell me to accept the inevitable or just shrug it off and enjoy life - I worry. There's really very little that I can do to change that aspect of myself, so I just go with it. I think it's actually sort of an asset professionally, because I rarely feel blindsided by work-related problems; that's not to say they don't upset me, but that I saw them coming and at least had the benefit of not being totally surprised. And if you can anticipate things, good or bad, you don't find yourself unprepared. As someone who carries everything from band-aids to a sewing kit in her handbag, I feel pretty irrationally prepared for a certain level of misfortune.
I feel like bad things happen in clusters, so it doesn't really surprise me that we had so many issues with our apartment at once. And while dealing with them was completely stressful and exhausting, I never had the sense that they were totally overwhelming or would never improve. They have, and will stay improved (again, knock on wood) until the next series of crappy things comes around - for which, naturally, I'll be as prepared as possible.
With that behind us, I was able to get a lot of things accomplished in my personal life that I had been having to put on the backburner on account of having so many things demanding my attention. I'm still stretched for time and energy, but at the very least, I was able to check some things off my mental to-do list.
Among those things: Booking time at the gun range! Like last year, we'll be celebrating my birthday at the West Side Pistol Range - the very same gun range used by De Niro in Taxi Driver.

Be still my heart!
