1014: The best costume for today.
Sorry for the lack of blogging -- I've been busy. Busy with a thing called... Christmas.
On Friday, I was afraid of blurting out anything that might give away Loren's secret Christmas cadeau to Chris -- Evil Dead: The Musical! Since she first mentioned getting tickets, I'd come dangerously close to ruining the surprise with inadvertent blurtage on many occasions, so I kept my Chris-contact to a minimum on Friday. I also made a conscious decision not to say anything in my blog which might spoil things for Chris, and played it safe by blogging absolutely nothing at all -- also, I was really, really tired because I'd been up wrapping gifts like some kind of gift-wrapping freak all night Thursday, so CUT ME SOME SLACK! I don't gift-wrap like normal human beings do, I gift-wrap as if lives depended on the crispness of my folds and the secret magic of my hidden Scotch tape tricks. Behold the beauty of my gift-wrap! Bow down to the Queen of Neurotic Gift Givers! BOW DOWN!
So, after a night of x-treme wrapping, to which Pete played horrified witness, I was pretty wiped out and didn't feel up to blogging, particularly when I could RUIN CHRISTMAS FOR MY BROTHER BY BLURTING OUT WHAT HIS GIRLFRIEND WAS GIVING HIM BECAUSE I WAS REALLY TIRED AND NOT THINKING.
But Christmas wasn't ruined! Not in the least! Well, not by me -- Pierce Brosnan nearly did. I don't think I realized just how bad Die Another Day was until I saw it again, occasionally slowing it down via Tivo to terrify my brother and myself with its horrific crappiness in excruciating detail. Invisible car? Ice fortress? HALLE BERRY?! More on that later...
We assembled for drinks prior to the 11 PM show on Friday -- Yes, I said 11 PM. (This isn't the Lion King, friend!) Loren had revealed the awesome surprise gift a few hours earlier over dinner, and after pouring several "Evil Dead" themed drinks down our throats and grabbing a few more to consume during the show (legally, too! Bless you Evil Dead: The Musical!), we sat down for what might have been the greatest thing I've ever seen in my life. I know, I make claims like that all the time but a) that's proof that I'm not the fiercely negative person everyone mistakes me for being and b) this really was the greatest thing I've ever seen in my life. I know it was intended as a gift for Chris, but I think everyone within a 4 to 5 row radius would agree that it was me who most enjoyed watching. Reanimated corpses! Dancing! Singing! An actor who looks exactly like Bruce Campbell! Fake blood splattering everywhere! Drinking something that looks like blood out of a tiny plastic cup! What's not to like, people?
Unfortunately, I couldn't find any clips online of the songs I wanted to post, but here's the musical's site and here's their MySpace page. JOIN THEM!
And here's Ash getting down to groovy business...
Saturday... I'm not sure what happened Saturday, as I'd really enjoyed drinking that blood-and-alcohol stuff on Friday. Also, we didn't get home until 3 or something on account of the show being so long and starting so late. While we lingered outside in a blood-loving fan frenzy, we managed to see numerous cast members and yet failed to say anything of real meaning to them. That's fine, I'm sure they get that constantly. In any event, we trudged home and konked out until some useless hour on Saturday. I believe Pete did some actual work, but I recuperated by eating a lot of candy.
When Pete returned home, we re-entered the world of the crazed and damned with Grey Gardens. I don't even have words to describe how incredible this movie is. I certainly don't mean that in the righteous, idiot way people tell you that movies are "important" -- I mean it in the sense that I can't stop thinking about this movie. It's strange, sweet, and a little bit distressing -- but mostly it's just completely riveting. And 100% quotable, which is nice for me because I prefer to communicate via pop culture references whenever possible. I think FourFour describes it a bit more artfully.
I'm fairly sure we watched another movie after that, but I can't think of what it would be.
On Sunday, we had to get ourselves together and head out to CT to see my family. Food was consumed by the truckload, Chris wore tight pants (as is his custom), and I did a lot of mocking (of the tight pants). We were blessed with a visit from the ever-awesome Dunaways. We watched several Bond movies (Die Another Day, unfortunately, among them) and half of us went to church while the other half went to Hell-o-operator, please give me number five. Actually, we didn't go to Hell -- we went to sleep because we weren't feeling good.
Monday/Christmas: We ate several more truckloads of fantastic food (thanks, Mom!) and opened gifts (such awesome gifts!). We cleared a small path through the mounds of shredded wrapping paper (all my hard work, ruined!) so that the next generation of Dunaways could join us, even though we really weren't worthy of being in the presence of their lovely, lovely hair. Pete departed for other family obligations, while Chris and I remained to consume more food and watch yet more Bond. We returned to NYC with bags full of food from Mom (thanks, Mom!) and, while I can't speak for Chris, continued to watch Bond.
Tuesday was spent continuing the consumption of food, but also making half-hearted attempts at re-entering the world of the productive. Nothing glamorous there, just errands and such. Oh, and more Bond.
