23: Oh, woe is me

I miss the days when my hair concerns were limited to the constant worry about whether or not I needed a haircut. You see, the hairloss that was all the rage back in 1999 is back. Slightly.

I spent the morning in Dr. Orentreich's office, having a 10:15 appointment which allowed me to see him around, oh, 11:30. He doesn't know what causes it, so I've got to get some bloodwork done. Fabulous.

I like how everyone I've told about this has said, "Oh, it's because you hate meat." Pete's "I had to eat a bowl of gristle" story would make anyone hate meat. Or, rather, eating it. In any event, shut up.

The highlight of the day was a conversation I overheard at the reception desk. A prototypical Upper East Side taut-faced Botox victim was evidently visiting the office for the first time in several years. The receptionist asked if any of her contact or insurance information had changed, and when the receptionist asked about the emergency contact, the patient looked blank. "Him? Oh, I divorced him ages ago! He'd tell you not to revive me!" The most beautiful part was the way she seemed unable to recall who he was for a moment.
